Is your desk making you unhealthy?

A messy desk in need of cleaning

Here’s how to clean your keyboard and screen and how often you need to do it.

A clean desk is a clean mind. Now, imagine a whole office of staff with clean minds. Mmmm … Hey, but you could at least make a start on cleaning desks and see what happens.

So, you’re a boss. You sit in your Sydney open-plan office and look around. Mounting papers, smudgy desks, and empty lunch plates nestled into too many corners.

That’s just the panoramic view. Don’t get too close. Everything just feels a little grottier.

The average desk harbours 400 times more bacteria than your average toilet seat*

That stat is enough to scare anyone. This has to change. An office cleaner once a week, doesn’t quite cut it with this team. How about plastering these top tips on the notice board? You have to try something.

Here’s how to clean an office desk.

1. Come armed with the right stuff

This is the kind of stuff that’s handy under any sink in Australia. Even a kitchen sink at work. A bucket of soapy water and dishcloth goes a long way. A dry cloth too to wipe things down.

You’ll need a dustpan and broom too. You’ll know why when you turn that keyboard upside down.

2. Work from top down

Start with the monitor and drag it out from the wall. Spray & Wipe is your friend. You have a bucket of soapy water, but Spray & Wipe just seems to get it done quicker.

The monitor will be dusty. Smudgy. Pretty awkward. Don’t worry, you’ll be outa here shortly.

Just think how much nicer it’ll be when you’re not wincing every time you see those gloopy crumbs hanging around anymore.

Don’t leave streaks on your monitor. That dry dishcloth will help. Just wipe it with that.

3. It’s time for the keyboard

I’m no scientist, but this has to be where most of those creepy bacteria are spending their time. A little gross party on your fingertips.

Tip it upside down and shake. Watch the little storm of crumbs fall. Dustpan and broom, here we come.

A damp cloth, with not too much water, will do the job without falling into the electrics.

4. It’s everything around the computer now and you’re done

You have a bin. Use it. There’s a place for everything and if there isn’t, you don’t need it.

When everything is put away, with the bench wiped down, you’ll finally see that other work you must do in a new light.

All up, you’ve spent about 5-7 minutes getting things back in order, but you’ll save a stack of time later when your head’s as clear as your desk.
